A Murfreesboro Pike McDonald’s employee who reported to police that she was robbed of a bank deposit bag containing nearly $3,000 now admits that she stole the cash and concocted the robbery story as part of her theft scheme.
Amy Deskins, 20, of Sam Davis Road in Smyrna, was arrested over the weekend on two felonies: making a false police report and theft in excess of $1,000.
On the evening of January 11, Deskins told South Precinct officers that she was making an after-hours deposit at a Murfreesboro Pike bank when a man approached, acted as if he had a gun, and demanded the money. Investigation by Detective Joe Winter, which included a review of available surveillance video, did not substantiate Deskins’ robbery claim. During a follow-up interview with Deskins on Saturday night, she admitted that she lied to officers on January 11 and had actually stolen the cash.
“We take this matter very seriously in that not only did Ms. Deskins steal from her employer, her false robbery caused officers to search the area for a suspect that never existed,” Chief Ronal Serpas said.
Deskins was released from jail Sunday on $5,000 bond.
