FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 18, 2007

Hermitage Precinct officers and detectives this evening ended a two-day sting operation that resulted in charges against 26 persons who attempted to buy property clearly identified by undercover officers as stolen. The merchandise included golf clubs, various power tools, new flat screen televisions (provided for the police department’s use by the Target Corporation) and car radios.

Undercover officers set up with the merchandise in a variety of locations, including business and strip mall parking lots as well as areas known for drug sales. Prospective buyers, including drug dealers who offered to trade dope for the merchandise, were clearly told that the goods had been stolen through home burglaries and other criminal activity. That didn’t matter to almost everyone who encountered the undercover team. Only one citizen over the two days reported the stolen merchandise operation to the police department.

“This police department is serious about making it very difficult for thieves to get rid of stolen property on the streets of Nashville,” Chief Ronal Serpas said. “Those who try to buy stolen goods need to know that the seller just may be an undercover police officer.”

Those charged during the two-day operation are identified as:

Similar undercover operations are planned for the future.
