Outstanding police work by East Precinct Officer Greg Lyons led to last night’s arrest of a 19-year-old armed robber minutes after he tried to holdup a Gallatin Pike convenience market.
At 8:18 p.m., Joshua Whitworth, of 521 Freda Villa in Madison, and an accomplice entered Discount Tobacco at 4610 Gallatin Pike. One was armed with a shotgun, the other a pistol. The suspects ordered the six persons inside the store to move to one side. When market owner David Espino, 23, heard what he thought was a gunshot, he pulled a pistol and opened fire. Both suspects ran from the market. As they fled, the robber with the pistol fired shots at a man who was sitting in a car waiting for two friends (customers) to return from the market.
East Precinct officers blanketed the area. In less than 15 minutes, Officer Lyons spotted Whitworth walking in the 700 block of Broadmoor Drive and took him into custody. Whitworth was suffering from a gunshot wound to one of his fingers. He subsequently admitted his involvement in the robbery. Efforts continue to locate the accomplice.
Whitworth was treated for his finger wound and then jailed on charges of attempted criminal homicide (for firing at the man in the parking lot) and two counts of attempted aggravated robbery. He is being held in lieu of $650,000 bond.
Whitworth’s prior arrest history reflects charges of aggravated assault, failure to be booked on a contributing to the delinquency of a minor citation, and drug possession.
