FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 5, 2007

South Precinct officers captured three suspects, including a Nashville man out on bond for murder, in Friday’s robbery of the Mapco Express at 26-A Tusculum Road.

Miles Jordan Armstrong, 19, of Harding Place, is charged with aggravated burglary. Armstrong was charged in July of last year with two counts of criminal homicide and two counts of attempted criminal homicide. He was out on $200,000 bond.

Alex Sparrow, 20, of Cloverland Drive, Brentwood, and Brian Alan Martin, 17, of Crest Drive, Nashville, are also charged with aggravated robbery.

Detectives say Martin and Sparrow entered the Mapco shortly after 7 a.m. Sparrow pointed a gun at the cashier and took money from the register. Martin and Sparrow left the store and got into a 1980s Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Armstrong.

South Precinct officers responded to the 7:15 a.m. emergency call within two minutes. The Oldsmobile was spotted traveling northwest on Una-Antioch Pike. A police pursuit ended with the suspect’s vehicle crashing into a tree at Nashboro Village Apartments at 115 Nashboro Boulevard off Murfreesboro Pike.

Martin stayed near the vehicle and was arrested. Armstrong fled, but was also quickly captured. Sparrow ran toward the nearby Hampton Chase Apartments through a drainage ditch. Hermitage Precinct officers, South Precinct officers, the K-9 unit, the Special Operations Response Team, and the police helicopter conducted an exhaustive search which included checking each apartment at Hampton Chase. Members of the Special Operations Response Team captured Sparrow at 11:05 a.m. when he walked out from the drainage area covered in mud. The stolen money was found on Sparrow’s person.

Sparrow and Martin were identified by the cashier and they (Sparrow and Martin) identified Armstrong as the driver. A gun was found in the getaway vehicle.

In addition to the murder charges, Armstrong’s lengthy arrest history includes felony drug and weapons charges. Sparrow was arrested for theft in May of last year.
