Crime Analysis Unit

The Crime Analysis Unit utilizes ESRI's ArcExplorer software program as a mapping tool to help show geographic crime series identification within the last four weeks, subject to a weekly update. This has geographic and temporal significance.

A civilian analyst in the Strategic Development Division enhances this capability with the ArcView software program, indicating density analyses for personal crimes and burglaries. A presentation in the monthly Intelligence briefing shows density clustering (hotspots) in Davidson County for violent part I offenses (homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) and residential burglaries. This gives the department a way to see trends develop. Plans for the future include predictive modeling (not just historic), and eventually a version on the web for public access.

The unit also utilizes a program that was developed to search by geographic areas, physical descriptions, or MO's (modus operandi) for suspects with a known criminal past.

Another significant service that is performed by the unit for the department is a recent prison releasees (to the area) report that is generated from many sources (Tennessee Department of Corrections, Federal Bureau of Prisons, CCA, and other state departments of corrections).
